I never planned to run a marathon.
Honestly, I just wanted to stay active when COVID hit in 2020 and all other sports were off the table. Running seemed like the only thing left, so I ran.
🏃♂️ Finding community
During that time, I joined a local running team, a group made up of all kinds of runners, from recreational joggers to seasoned marathoners. What made it special was the openness. It didn’t matter how fast you were or how far you ran. That inclusive energy created the perfect space for growth.
Surrounded by that kind of support, I slowly pushed myself. Week after week, I built up mileage and eventually hit 50 kilometers per week – a huge milestone for me so early in the journey.
🎯 The unofficial marathon
With official races canceled due to the pandemic, our team came up with a bold idea: organize an unofficial marathon in Lisbon. I wasn’t planning to join… until I was.
Being part of their journey, listening to what running meant to them, and sensing their motivation slowly pulled me in. Before I knew it, I was in full marathon prep mode.
📚 Learning the hard way
To get ready, I used a mix of structured online training plans and advice from more experienced teammates. There was a lot to learn: fueling, hydration, pacing, recovery, The learning curve was intense.
I still remember my first 30 kilometer run. I was completely drained, but it changed something in me. It taught me what real effort feels like and how deeply rewarding it is to push past your own limits.
🏁 Race day – December 20, 2020
Because of restrictions, everything had to be improvised. Friends stepped in to help with hydration and encouragement along the way. The weather held up. The first 30 kilometers felt strong. The last 12? Brutal.
At kilometer 41, a staircase appeared out of nowhere. That almost broke me. My legs were gone. It felt cruel and surreal but I made it through.
✨ The Finish Line
Crossing that finish line was pure magic. Exhaustion. Pride. Joy. All at once.
And the moment I caught my breath, one thought came to mind: “When’s the next one?”
