How the pandemic turned me into a marathon runner

I never planned to run a marathon. Honestly, I just wanted to stay active when COVID hit in 2020 and all other sports were off the table. Running seemed like the only thing left, so I ran.

I became part of a local running team that brought together a mix of abilities, from recreational joggers to highly experienced marathon runners. The group’s open attitude toward all paces created the perfect environment for growth. Surrounded by that kind of energy, I steadily increased my mileage and reached 50 kilometers per week, a huge personal breakthrough so early in my journey.

With no official races due to the pandemic, the team decided to organize an unofficial marathon in Lisbon. I wasn’t planning to join… until I was. Training alongside others, listening to their stories, and getting wrapped up in their excitement pulled me in. Suddenly, I was in marathon prep mode.

To get ready, I combined structured advice from online marathon programs with insights shared by more experienced teammates. There was much to absorb, everything from energy intake and hydration strategies to pacing and recovery techniques. The first time I covered 30 kilometers, I was completely drained. Yet the experience was transformational, revealing both the effort required and the satisfaction that comes with surpassing personal boundaries.

Then came race day: December 20, 2020. With restrictions still in place, everything had to be improvised. Friends helped with water and support along the route. The weather cooperated. The first 30 kilometers felt great. The last 12 were brutal.

At km 41, stairs appeared out of nowhere. That almost broke me. My legs were done. It felt surreal and cruel, but I got through it.

Crossing that finish line was pure magic. Exhaustion, pride, and joy all mixed together. And as soon as I caught my breath, I knew it wasn’t the end.

And all I could think was, When’s the next one?
